Customer Profile: Customer is an embedded Telecom Solutions Company that helps businesses across the Telecom value chain, accelerate product development life cycles. The customer and its subsidiaries, cater to large network equipment manufacturers (both wireless and wireline), semiconductor manufacturers supplying to the telecom market, wireless terminal product vendors and test and measurement equipment providers, worldwide.

Problem Statement There were discrete reporting systems on multiple technologies that did not integrate seamlessly. Also, ad-hoc reporting was not possible.

Situation

After sufficient research and comparative evaluation of various datawarehousing solutions, the customer decided to opt for MS SQL Server 2005 based BI solution. Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 is a mature platform, which delivers advanced features, superior integration with the database and an enhanced end-user experience.

The key objective of the BI solution from customer's perspective was to have a single point of reporting source for the entire organization and its subsidiaries, which would provide a web-based platform for deploying standard/canned reports as well as to provide Ad-hoc analysis.

The customer was looking for a partner with multiple technology expertise and immense experience in the field of BI for helping them in development of the BI Solution.

Solution

Sonata Information Technology Limited, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, designed a unified dimension model and built a robust data warehouse to meet the operational and analytical reporting requirements with integrated security.

Sonata conducted an intensive requirements analysis for the development of the BI solution and identified three basic functional areas, which needed to be addressed:

• Revenue
  
• Staffing
  
• Space Utilization

Staffing, Revenue and Space utilization cubes were built over the warehouse.
The Cube enables slicing and dicing of data. Ad-hoc reports can be generated on the fly.

Further canned reports (for Power Users) were generated with help of SSRS and were published on the SharePoint portal (Web Based application).

OLAP level role based security was created.
Roles such as CXO, Finance Prime, HR Prime, Business Unit Head, and Project Manager were created.
(CXOs could browse both the cubes with all the data made available to them; HR prime could browse only the Staffing cube, Business Unit Head could access data related to his BU)
