Oracle
RAC: An Introduction
|
|
Oracle
Real Application Clusters (RAC) allows your
Oracle Database to run any packaged or custom
application, unchanged across a set of clustered
servers. It offers no less than the highest
levels of availability and most flexible
scalability for your banking operations.
So whether you
need to add more processing power without
taking users offline, or enjoy high-end,
commercially realistic functionality, your
search ends at Oracle RAC 10g.

| Oracle
RAC: A Closer Look |
| The RAC
database is a clustered database. A cluster
is a group of independent servers that cooperate
as a single system. A clustered database is,
by definition, a single database that may
be accessed by multiple instances. Redundant
hardware components allow clusters to avoid
single points-of-failure and provide exceptional
fault resilience. In the event of system failure,
clustering ensures high availability to system
users. Access to mission-critical data, for
instance, is not lost. Additionally, RAC is
an extension of the Oracle Database and therefore
benefits from the manageability, reliability
and security features built into Oracle Database
10g. |
|
Oracle RAC: The Advantage
|
| |
Maximized availability
Oracle RAC 10g provides the infrastructure
for datacenter high availability.
|
| |
Reliability
RAC takes Oracle Database's legendary reliability
one step further. It removes the database
server as a single point-of failure. If
an instance fails, the remaining instances
in the cluster are still open and active.
• Recoverability Failure recovery was
never this easy. Fast Availability, Fast
Connection Failover and Transparent Application
Failover effectively shield component failure
from users.
|
| |
Error Detection
Apart from Fast Application Recovery and
automatic failure recovery, Oracle Clusterware
automatically monitors RAC databases and
provides fast detection of problems in any
environment.
|
| |
Continuous Operations
RAC provides continuous service
for both planned and unplanned stages. If
a node or instance fails, the database remains
open and the application is able to access
data.
|
|
Total Scalability
Oracle RAC provides unique technology for
scaling applications. Its architecture automatically
accommodates rapidly changing business requirements
and the resulting workload changes.

Sonata & RAC: Success
Stories
|
|
The
Client:
An Indian telecom giant had a requirement
to design a system for automating their
e-Tele department. Sonata was involved in
this project initially as a consultant to
validate the architecture adopted by the
department.
The Requirement:
As one of India's leading telecom companies,
the client relies on in-house software e-Tele
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system
to support sales and reservations for its
fast-growing customer base. The system was
nearing capacity when the company decided
to roll out new in-store capabilities that
would require expanding system capacity by
40%. With further growth planned, company
needed a reliable system that could handle
the current load and scale to support future
demands.
The Solution:
Initially the customer had selected the
Oracle 9i DB Enterprise edition on a single
node. Sonata recommended the adoption of
RAC, a scalable cluster based on the Sun
cluster and Oracle9i RAC. Using high throughput
clustering technology, Oracle9i RAC and
the Sun cluster ensured the continuous availability
of customer needs for such a critical business
system, as well as enhanced performance
and the flexibility to upgrade capacity
seamlessly.

|
The
Client:
One of India's largest nationalized banks
implemented Oracle 9i RAC on HP Tru 64 Unix,
version 5.1b.
The
Result:
After the Oracle 9i RAC implementation,
there were over 50% reductions in critical
batch jobs and online response time. There
was substantial improvement in overall performance
of the Oracle database and applications
after the migration.

The
Client:
An Indian State Government's tax department
had a requirement to design a system for
automating taxation. Sonata was involved
in this project initially as a consultant
to validate the architecture adopted by
the taxation department.
The
Solution:
Initially the customer had selected the
Oracle 9i DB Enterprise edition on a single
node. As part of the solution, Sonata suggested
the adoption of RAC. Initially, the client
was apprehensive due to the cost of software
products like Volume Manager. Sonata recommended
the 10g DB as the new technology ASM is
part of the product, and the DB does not
require any additional 3rd party volume
managers. Accepted as a dynamic and commercially
realistic solution, the task implementation
of RAC and 10g DB was entrusted to Sonata.

Features
Oracle RAC configuration options and features
offer companies a wide range of flexibility
for designing high availability solutions.
The first major phase in delivering a successful
Oracle RAC implementation is defining the
actual goals of the project. The Requirements
Definition step involves identifying and
documenting the features and functionality
